March Madness Sexism

I saw this lovely graphic on HuffingtonPost today:
Get it?! Girls only care about high heels, catching husbands, and cuddling toys! Nevermind that there are plenty of women who know a lot about basketball, not to mention that there's a women's division of NCAA basketball. No, I'm not one of them but I still find this thing sexist. Just because I don't care about sports does not mean that I fit these stereotypes. What's worse? This graphic was created by a wine company that markets to women called Seven Daughters. "Perfect for Girls Night Out!" teehee! No, thanks, you can keep your fucking wine and your fucking insulting graphic, Seven Daughters.

Loving Hut

A new all vegan restaurant opened yesterday in Reynoldsburg, Ohio! It's an international chain called Loving Hut. Some people think that Loving Hut restaurants are funding a "cult." The Loving Hut message is Be veg, go green to save the planet. I really don't see how anyone is being exploited within this group of people. They are working to reduce the exploitation of animals and I agree with that initiative.
Here's what I know for sure about Loving Hut: great-tasting vegan food at affordable prices. Sounds like a win to me.

Show us yer Ankles!

Is no part of a woman's body free from objectification? In this Old Navy commercial, the female ankle takes center stage to the male gaze. A group of hypersexualized women (Cherrie and the Stems *gag*) dance and sing about showing off their ankles. "Welcome to the Ankle show." The male in the commercial sings, "Time to show them ankles, please. Those sexy little things about a foot below your knees." I guess we should be happy that he said please, huh? Seriously, it's bad enough that every other part of our bodies get chopped into titillating viewable bits but now our ankles, too!?

Rape Myths

Countless women are sexually assaulted and raped in the military. Women should be congratulated for standing up and holding the perpetrators accountable; instead they’re being victimized again by the public ("the third rape" as Andrea Dworkin would call it-the first being the actual rape, the second being the trial in which the victim's rape is retold and relived.) The same old rape myths are circulating around the comments section on this article . “She deserved it because she was drunk,” “She probably slept with him and then regretted it, now she’s calling it rape,”etc.  All these woman-hating  favourites make an appearance. Some vile being named Huggsyug goes as far as saying , “All these stories sound suspect.” Yes, Huggsyug, all the women made it all up. Insert eyeroll. I don’t know why I bother reading the comment sections on any articles because I always end up angry. Will things ever change for women? How can some women insist that there is no need for feminism in this day and age when there are people like Huggsyug  out there possibly serving on the jury of a rape trial?
